Why ECE / The case for staying

Look beyond the final exam.

Equal Coloured Education is an initiative powered by the National Coloured Congress (NCC). A learner’s education story begins long before matric. ECE is being developed to notice when that story is at risk and help keep the next chapter possible.

01 / Why retention matters

The matric pass rate does not tell the whole story.

We must also ask who never reached Grade 12. A pass rate counts learners who made it to the final exam; ECE is concerned with the earlier points where a learner can become invisible to the system.

01

Disengage or stop attending

02

Fall behind academically without support

03

Face unsafe environments or exclusion

04

Finish school without a pathway forward

Retention is not only an education statistic. It is the possibility of a learner’s next chapter.
02 / The mission

Keep the learner in the system.

ECE is being designed around a simple principle: when a learner begins to fall through the cracks, someone must notice. When that happens, there must be a system capable of responding.

03 / Start locally

Start locally. Prove it. Scale what works.

ECE intends to launch its first operating model in Mitchells Plain. The objective is to understand what works on the ground, measure the results and develop a model capable of expanding into other communities.

Mitchells Plain
01 prove the model
02 refine
03 expand

Longer-term expansion into Hanover Park, Atlantis and Elsies River is a proposal, not an existing operation.

The proposed model joins rights, learning, safety and future opportunities.
